Some Hindu devotees in Amritsar, India on Sunday, May 11, 2014, went
through the exhilarating process of 'cheek piercing' as a Mother's Day
celebration in honor of their goddess Maha Mariamman.
The cheek
piercing process involved the insertion of a long metal rod from one
cheek, straight through the mouth of the person, and out through the
other cheek.
Dozens of Hindu devotees turned up for the
mother's day procession to offer prayers to their goddess and fulfill
their vows by several forms of body piercing and fasting as they worship
her to purify themselves.
The Hindu devotees believe that the
goddess Maha Mariamman protects whoever worships her and blesses them
