Athi River Boy With Tail Undergoes Surgery To Have it Removed – PHOTO

A 4 year old boy from Athi River with a ‘tail’ underwent an operation at the Machakos District hospital to have it removed.
Felix Mwendeti’s story was aired in the media last week where the family also made  an appeal for help to raise funds. During the Madaraka Day celebrations on Sunday, the President thanked the media for airing such stories. President Uhuru pledged to set aside funds in the health budget that would be used to cater for such rare medical conditions.
In his speech, the President said that the government will set up a fund to pay for the treatment of Kenyans with rare medical conditions. “The importance of this initiative was brought home to us a few days ago when a local newspaper carried the story of a boy from Athi River with a rare medical condition,” said the president.
The operation took less than two hours and the doctors told Mwendeti’s mother, Mary Musembi that they had cut off the tail completely and she had no reasons to worry. A happy Mary could not hide her joy that her son could lead a normal life.
“I lack words to express my joy and gratitude to all those who came to our aid. Felix will now live a normal life and go about normal business like other children,” She said.
Mwandeti was expected to be taken to Kenyatta National Hospital but Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua organized for the boy to be transferred to the Machakos District Hospital where doctors have been taking care of him.
