Last week, it was announced that the South Sudan oil rich town of Bentiu had been seized by rebels.
What was not announced was the piles of bodies left during this
undertaking. Photos have emerged showing tens of bodies lying dead on
streets, in the most shocking incident yet from our war-torn neighbours.
The rebels are from the nuer tribe, the same ethnic group that former
Vice President Riek Machar, who is now a rebel leader, comes from. A
top humanitarian official, Toby Lanzer told the Associated Press that he
counted 150 bodies, despite arriving on the third day of the operation.
It is believed up to 1000 may have lost their lives last week, with CNN
reporting that 200 were killed in just one Mosque.
Most of the dead are defenceless civilians whose only mistake was being born in the wrong tribe.
President Uhuru recently apologised for Kenya’s failure to intervene
during Rwanda’s genocide. Perhaps this is his chance to spare his
successor a similar predicament.
